Why MOQ Moves Before The Price Moves
For cotton towels, MOQ is often driven by yarn dyeing, loom scheduling, and pile construction. For cleaning microfiber, the pressure points are different. We usually work with warp-knitted or weft-knitted polyester-polyamide fabric, then cut, edge, inspect, fold, pack, and cartonize. The mill can technically cut small quantities, but every color and size split creates setup minutes, fabric remnants, label changes, and inspection batches.
Our normal MOQ is 500 pcs per design / per color. For plain bulk microfiber cleaning towels, we can sometimes hold that number when the buyer accepts stocked fabric colors and a standard 30 x 30 cm, 40 x 40 cm, or 40 x 60 cm size. When the order needs custom Pantone dyeing, silicone-free claims, retail sleeves, or multi-pack barcode separation, the practical MOQ often rises to 1,000-2,000 pcs per color because the hidden handling cost is larger than the fabric cost.
| Order setup | Practical MOQ | Where cost pressure starts | Typical use |
|---|---|---|---|
| Stock color, standard size, bulk polybag | 500 pcs per color | Cutting and edging only | Janitorial, distributor refill stock |
| Custom PMS shade, standard GSM | 1,000 pcs per color | Dye lot control and shade approval | Private label microfiber towels |
| Two-sided pile, custom edge color | 1,500 pcs per color | Fabric allocation plus thread changeover | Retail cleaning kits |
| Printed insert card, barcode, carton mark per SKU | 2,000 pcs per SKU | Packing line separation | Amazon, club store, hardware chain |
| Custom weave texture or embossed pattern | 3,000-5,000 pcs per color | Knitting setup and trial loss | Brand-owned cleaning system |
This is why a quote for microfiber towels for cleaning MOQ and pricing should not be judged only by the first unit price line. A 500 pc test order may be possible, but it may carry USD 0.06-0.14 per pc more in labor and packing overhead than a clean 3,000 pc run. If the buyer expects reorder pricing later, we separate sample-run pricing from repeat-order pricing on the proforma invoice.
The Spec Lines That Change Cost First
The fastest way to get a wrong quote is to ask for “microfiber cleaning cloth, good quality, best price.” We need the working surface, GSM, composition, size tolerance, edge, packaging, and color plan. Those lines decide fabric yield before any sales margin is discussed.
- GSM: common cleaning ranges are 220-260 GSM for light dusting, 280-340 GSM for general household and janitorial use, 350-420 GSM for automotive and glass-safe cloths, and 450-600 GSM for plush drying or detailing towels.
- Composition: 80/20 polyester-polyamide is the normal cost-control option; 70/30 gives a softer hand and stronger water pickup but usually adds USD 0.025-0.07 per 40 x 40 cm cloth depending on GSM and volume.
- Size: 30 x 30 cm is efficient for multipacks; 40 x 40 cm is the most common all-purpose format; 40 x 60 cm and 50 x 80 cm raise carton volume quickly.
- Edge: overlock is lowest cost, ultrasonic cut reduces lint from thread but can feel sharper, microfiber suede binding improves perceived value but adds labor.
- Packaging: bulk 50 pcs/polybag is cheap; 3-pack or 5-pack retail carding changes the packing speed and carton count.
A small construction detail that buyers often miss is pile orientation. On some dual-pile cloths, one side is shorter and tighter for scrubbing while the other is higher pile for pickup. If the cutting team rotates panels incorrectly to improve yield, the towel can show inconsistent sheen from piece to piece. We mark grain direction on the cutting ticket for repeat orders where shelf appearance matters.
microfiber towels for cleaning MOQ and pricing By Volume
The following FOB China bands are realistic for OEM cleaning microfiber towel programs from our factory, assuming normal export carton packing, no import duty, and no domestic delivery at destination. They are not spot quotes because yarn price, exchange rate, and packaging design move, but they are close enough for budget planning.
| Spec example | 500-999 pcs | 1,000-2,999 pcs | 3,000-9,999 pcs | 10,000+ pcs |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 30 x 30 cm, 250 GSM, 80/20, overlock, bulk pack | USD 0.29-0.38 | USD 0.24-0.32 | USD 0.21-0.28 | USD 0.18-0.25 |
| 40 x 40 cm, 300 GSM, 80/20, overlock, bulk pack | USD 0.46-0.58 | USD 0.39-0.50 | USD 0.34-0.44 | USD 0.30-0.39 |
| 40 x 40 cm, 350 GSM, 70/30, suede edge | USD 0.72-0.92 | USD 0.62-0.80 | USD 0.55-0.70 | USD 0.49-0.63 |
| 40 x 60 cm, 400 GSM, dual pile, retail sleeve | USD 1.28-1.62 | USD 1.12-1.42 | USD 0.98-1.26 | USD 0.88-1.14 |
At 500 pcs, the buyer is paying for factory time as much as fabric. A 40 x 40 cm 300 GSM cloth weighs about 48 g before edging and packing. If the cloth is packed in 5-packs with a printed belly band, the paper, folding, and barcode handling can add USD 0.035-0.075 per cloth. On a 10,000 pc order, those same tasks are spread across a full packing shift, so the added cost per cloth falls.
For cost-per-use, we look at laundry survival rather than the lowest landed unit. A distributor comparing a USD 0.36 cloth at 260 GSM against a USD 0.52 cloth at 340 GSM may see a 44% higher purchase price. If the lighter cloth loses edge shape after 28 commercial washes and the heavier cloth holds to 55 washes, the effective cost is USD 0.0129 per wash versus USD 0.0095. That is the kind of math we use when a buyer asks us to shave GSM below the application.
Color Splits Are The Quiet MOQ Trap
Cleaning programs often want color coding: blue for glass, yellow for dusting, green for kitchen, red for restroom. The system is useful for hygiene control, but it changes MOQ. Four colors at 500 pcs each is easier than one buyer asking for 2,000 pcs total split into eight colors of 250 pcs. The second order sounds the same in total quantity, but the factory handles it as eight mini orders.
| Color plan | Factory impact | Recommendation |
|---|---|---|
| 1 color, 2 sizes | Simple cutting schedule | Best for first OEM trial |
| 4 colors, same size and GSM | Manageable if each color reaches 500 pcs | Good hygiene-coded program |
| 6-8 colors below 500 pcs each | Higher shade, thread, and packing risk | Use stock colors or consolidate slow movers |
| Custom Pantone per color | Lab dip and bulk shade approval required | Start at 1,000 pcs per color where possible |
For custom dyeing, we control shade using lab dips and bulk shade bands under D65 light. For wet crocking and wash colorfastness, buyers can request ISO 105-X12 and ISO 105-C06 checks. Dark microfiber colors can show rubbing risk on white laminate or painted cabinets if the dye process is pushed too fast, so we do not approve shipment only by visual color match.
- Ask whether the quoted color is a stock fabric color or custom dyed to Pantone.
- Keep thread color matched to the body if the towel will be folded edge-out in retail packaging.
- Avoid launching too many low-volume colors in the first PO; add secondary colors after sales data is real.
- Use carton marks that separate color clearly, because warehouse picking errors are more common than production mixing on multi-color cleaning cloth orders.
Edge, Label, And Packout Choices Buyers Underestimate
Overlock edging is the normal choice for microfiber cloth wholesale because it is fast, stable, and inexpensive. The weak point is thread abrasion after repeated laundering, especially if the buyer specifies a very low-density stitch to cut cost. We normally target 9-11 stitches per inch for cleaning cloth overlock. Below that, corners start opening during wash testing.
Ultrasonic cutting is often requested for glass cloths because there is no sewn thread lint. It works best on thinner, tighter fabric. On plush 400 GSM cloth, ultrasonic edges can feel stiff or curl after heat exposure. Suede binding gives the cleanest retail look, but it is not always suitable for industrial wiping because the bound edge can trap grit if users clean machinery or automotive surfaces.
| Detail | Low-cost choice | Higher-control choice | Price effect |
|---|---|---|---|
| Edge finish | 3-thread overlock | Suede binding or 4-thread overlock | Adds USD 0.015-0.06 per pc |
| Care label | No label or printed polybag warning | Sewn label with fiber content and wash symbols | Adds USD 0.01-0.025 per pc |
| Retail pack | Bulk 25 or 50 pcs/polybag | 3-pack, 5-pack, insert card, barcode | Adds USD 0.03-0.12 per pc |
| Carton plan | Mixed SKU carton | One SKU per export carton | May increase carton count but reduces warehouse claims |
We are OEKO-TEX Standard 100 Class I certified, BSCI audited, and ISO 9001 certified. For cleaning microfiber, OEKO-TEX is still useful even when the item is not for baby skin contact because it forces discipline around restricted substances in dyeing and finishing. Buyers selling into retail channels should also align labeling with destination rules, especially fiber content, country of origin, and care symbols.
What We Test Before We Confirm Bulk
A microfiber cleaning towel can look acceptable in a photo and still fail in use. We do not rely on handfeel alone. For a new OEM cleaning program, our lab and QC team usually run a small group of checks before bulk approval, then repeat selected checks during pre-shipment inspection.
- Confirm fabric weight by GSM cutting method, using several swatches across the roll instead of one edge sample.
- Check size after relaxation and after wash; normal tolerance is often +/-3% unless the buyer needs tighter retail dimensions.
- Run absorbency pickup and drip checks, especially for 70/30 split microfiber cloth used on glass or auto surfaces.
- Test edge strength after 5 domestic wash cycles for sample approval, then 20-30 cycles for higher-risk janitorial or commercial programs.
- Inspect lint on dark and glossy surfaces, because loose fiber contamination is a common complaint for glass, electronics, and automotive buyers.
For colorfastness, common references include ISO 105-C06 for domestic and commercial laundering behavior and ISO 105-X12 for rubbing. For dimensional change, we use ISO 5077 as a reference after washing and drying. Not every buyer pays for third-party lab reports on a 1,000 pc order, but the test method should still be written into the technical data sheet so everyone knows what “pass” means.

Lead Time From Lab Dip To Export Carton
For a simple cleaning cloth program using stock colors, sample preparation can take 5-8 days. Custom color lab dips normally need 6-10 days, plus buyer review time. Bulk production for 3,000-20,000 pcs usually runs 18-28 days after deposit, artwork, color, and packaging approval. For 50,000+ pcs with multi-SKU retail packout, we plan 32-45 days because cutting, folding, barcode sorting, and final inspection take more shifts.
- Day 1-3: confirm technical data sheet, artwork, packing method, and target price band.
- Day 4-12: make lab dip or pre-production sample; check GSM, edge, size, and packaging fit.
- Day 13-18: buyer approval window; delayed comments here push the whole shipment.
- Day 19-42: bulk knitting or fabric allocation, dyeing if needed, cutting, edging, packing, and internal QC.
- Final 2-4 days: pre-shipment inspection, carton weighing, export documents, and booking handoff.
Air freight rarely makes sense for low-price cleaning cloths unless a retailer has a launch penalty. A 40 x 40 cm 300 GSM cloth is compact, but cartons become heavy fast. Sea freight is usually the better route for replenishment. For freight planning, the logic in container vs air freight towel orders applies even more strongly to microfiber because unit value per carton is modest.
How To Negotiate MOQ Without Damaging The Program
We understand why buyers ask for low MOQ. New colors and retail packs need testing. The problem is that pushing every SKU down to 300 pcs usually removes the mill’s ability to control shade, packout, and QC efficiently. A better negotiation is to reduce complexity while keeping the factory run clean.
- Keep one fabric GSM across the first launch, then vary color or pack count only.
- Use one carton size and one master label layout to reduce packing setup.
- Place 500 pcs per color for trial SKUs but commit 1,500-3,000 pcs for the expected core color.
- Approve stock colors for the first PO if custom Pantone matching is not central to the brand.
- Combine reorder timing with other towel programs when possible, especially if the buyer also sources gym, auto, or hospitality towels.
A practical example: a brand wanted 9 colors of 40 x 40 cm 320 GSM cloths, 400 pcs per color, in 4-pack retail sleeves. The first quote carried too much packing overhead. We changed the launch to 4 colors at 800 pcs each and 5 colors held for the second PO. The FOB price moved from USD 0.61 per cloth to USD 0.49, while the retail shelf still had enough color variety to test demand.

RFQ Lines We Need Before Quoting
A clean RFQ lets us quote microfiber towels for cleaning MOQ and pricing without padding the number for unknowns. If the buyer cannot provide every detail, we can propose defaults, but we prefer to mark those defaults clearly so the sample and bulk order do not drift.
- Size in centimeters and whether tolerance is before or after wash.
- GSM target and acceptable range, for example 300 GSM +/-5%.
- Composition request: 80/20, 70/30, or no preference if absorbency target is stated.
- Pile structure: terry microfiber, suede, waffle, fish-scale glass cloth, coral fleece, or dual pile.
- Edge type, thread color, label requirement, and retail or bulk pack method.
- Color plan by SKU, including stock color acceptance or Pantone target.
- Testing requirement: OEKO-TEX, ISO 105-C06, ISO 105-X12, ISO 5077, or buyer-specific protocol.
- Quantity per SKU, destination port, and whether the quote should be FOB Ningbo/Shanghai or another Incoterm.
Our factory has 220 employees, has operated since 2007, and produces about 2.4M towels annually for 80+ brand clients in 47 countries. That scale helps when the program is organized. It does not remove the physics of cutting yield, dye lots, and packout time. The most stable price comes from a stable spec.
For buyers comparing factory-direct against trading company offers, ask for the acceptance standard in writing. A quote that is USD 0.04 lower but has no GSM tolerance, no colorfastness method, and no carton weight target is not the same product. Claims on microfiber cleaning towels usually come from lint, edge failure, shade mismatch, or barcode/carton mixing, and all four can be controlled before shipment if the spec is written correctly.
