Cruise line linen is a uniquely demanding category. Pool deck towels are exposed to chlorine, UV, salt spray and sand simultaneously. Cabin linens turn over twice weekly across thousands of guests. Spa wraps need premium hand-feel for the wellness program. And everything ships in port-to-port logistics windows where late delivery means the linen literally misses the cruise. We have been supplying cruise programs since 2018 with a dedicated production line.
The cruise program structure
| SKU | Use | Volume per ship (3000 pax) |
|---|---|---|
| Cabin bath towel | Per-cabin bath service | 12,000-18,000 pcs |
| Cabin hand towel | Per-cabin | 8,000-12,000 pcs |
| Pool deck towel | Outdoor deck loungers | 6,000-12,000 pcs |
| Spa wraps | Onboard spa | 2,000-4,000 pcs |
| Beach towels | Tendered shore excursions | 4,000-8,000 pcs |
| Dining service | Restaurant napkins/wraps | Variable |
Total active inventory for a 3,000-pax mid-size cruise ship: 35,000-55,000 pieces of linen. Annual replacement: 15,000-25,000 pieces. This is large enough to require dedicated supplier capacity allocation, not opportunistic spot buying.
UV-resistance spec for pool deck
Cruise pool decks see more direct sun exposure than land-based hotel pools. UV breaks down reactive dyes faster, so we spec vat-dyed colors plus UV-absorber finishing chemistry for cruise pool inventory. Test method: ISO 105-B02, target grade 4 minimum after accelerated UV exposure.
Chlorine-resistance spec
Cruise pools run higher chlorine concentrations than hotel pools (regulatory requirement for shipboard sanitation). Reactive dyes fade in 30-50 chlorine cycles. Vat dyes hold through 150+ cycles. For any colored pool deck towel on a cruise program: vat-dye only.
Logistics and timing
Cruise inventory ships to embarkation port warehouses, not to the cruise line corporate office. Coordination is direct with the ship's operations team. Standard timing for a new ship build or refurb:
- T-minus 16 weeks: Tech-pack and tender finalized
- T-minus 14 weeks: Production starts
- T-minus 6 weeks: Container loaded at FOB port
- T-minus 4 weeks: Arrival at embarkation port warehouse
- T-minus 2 weeks: Loaded onto ship during turnaround
Late deliveries on cruise programs are particularly painful because the ship sails on schedule regardless. We require ironclad timelines and offer penalty clauses on our cruise contracts. Air freight as backup is mandatory and pre-quoted in the program spec.
