Start with the line item that changes everything: finished size
For this category, buyers often talk about "oversized" as if it were one spec. It is not. A 90 × 180 cm towel, a 100 × 180 cm towel, and a 100 × 200 cm towel do not behave the same in weaving efficiency, printing yield, carton count, or freight. On our floor, the first thing we do for an oversized beach towels supplier checklist request is lock the finished size after wash, not the loom width before wash. For cotton beach towels, we normally build shrinkage allowance into the greige plan because reactive-dyed velour and yarn-dyed jacquard will land differently after the first full wash cycle.
For example, if the buyer wants a finished 100 × 180 cm towel in 100% cotton velour, we may weave and finish against a larger grey-state target so the towel lands within tolerance after scouring, dyeing, shearing, and tumble finishing. In our internal QC, we usually agree dimensional tolerance at about ±3% on finished size unless the tech pack asks tighter. If a buyer tries to compare quotations without clarifying whether the size is pre-wash, loom-state, or finished-state, one mill will look cheaper simply because it is not pricing the same article.
| Finished size | Common use | Weight window we usually quote | Packing effect |
|---|---|---|---|
| 90 × 180 cm | General resort and retail | 380-460 GSM | Good carton efficiency |
| 100 × 180 cm | Beach club and DTC statement towel | 380-500 GSM | Moderate carton count |
| 100 × 200 cm | Luxury cabana and premium retail | 400-520 GSM | Lower pcs per carton, higher freight per unit |
The construction decision is usually velour vs terry face visibility
Most large-format beach towels that carry artwork use printed velour on one side with terry loops on the reverse. The shearing step creates a smooth surface so the print edges hold better than on an unsheared loop face. That matters for logo clarity, especially in blocks of color or illustrated resort artwork. A fully looped terry face absorbs well, but it scatters fine print detail and usually looks less sharp once the loops rise after washing.
There is also a handle difference buyers should feel in sampling. Velour gives a flatter, photo-friendly face. Terry gives a more obvious absorbent hand. If the towel is for pool-deck stacking and social-media-heavy environments, buyers often choose velour even if absorbency drops slightly on the printed side. If the towel is for heavy turnover at busy resorts, a yarn-dyed dobby or jacquard structure may outlast a heavily printed face because there is less surface abrasion from shearing.
- Reactive print on cotton velour is our default for detailed artwork and broad color fields.
- Yarn-dyed jacquard works better when the brand wants woven identity and lower visual fade after repeated industrial laundry.
- Piece-dyed solid towels with embroidered labels are the simplest route when the program needs faster replenishment and easier color continuity.
GSM only matters after you match it to use and footprint
Buyers sometimes ask for 500 GSM because it sounds substantial. On an oversized article, that can push unit weight into a range that slows drying, raises airfreight pain, and cuts carton quantity more than expected. For a large beach towel, we usually see the most balanced programs land between 400 and 460 GSM. Below that, the towel can feel underbuilt if the dimensions are generous. Above that, it can feel luxurious on arrival but become slow in resort laundry rotation.
The right target depends on turnover. A beach club that launders daily and wants fast room-to-rack cycling often performs better with about 420 GSM ring-spun cotton. A retail brand selling a single hero design may accept 470 GSM because shelf hand and unboxing matter more than laundry throughput. We test bulk hand feel, water pickup, and post-wash dimensional stability together; GSM by itself is not enough.
| Program type | Typical GSM | What buyers gain | What buyers give up |
|---|---|---|---|
| Promo or event resale | 360-400 GSM | Lower FOB, lower freight | Less body, lower perceived fullness |
| Resort operating stock | 400-440 GSM | Balanced absorbency and drying | Less dramatic shelf feel than heavier builds |
| Premium retail oversized | 450-500 GSM | Fuller hand and denser face | Higher freight, slower drying, tighter MOQ discipline needed |
Where quotations drift apart in an oversized beach towels supplier checklist request
If you receive four FOB offers and one is far below the others, the gap usually comes from hidden assumptions rather than mill efficiency. We see price drift most often in cotton grade, loop density, print coverage, hem treatment, and packing method. A quotation that excludes woven label sewing, individual polybagging, barcode stickers, or carton drop-test grade is not directly comparable to one that includes them.
On current China FOB programs for 100% cotton oversized beach towels, a practical range for a 90 × 180 cm reactive-printed velour article at 420-440 GSM is around USD 4.10-5.05 per piece at 3,000-5,000 pcs, depending on artwork coverage and packing. Move to 100 × 200 cm at 450-480 GSM with tighter color tolerance and branded retail insert, and we more often quote in the USD 5.60-6.95 range at similar volume. At 500 pcs, setup and weaving efficiency move the number up sharply because our MOQ is 500 pcs per design per color, but the article still carries sampling, cylinder, proofing, and packing overhead.
| Spec scenario | Order volume | Indicative FOB China | Main price drivers |
|---|---|---|---|
| 90 × 180 cm, 420 GSM, reactive print velour, bulk pack | 3,000 pcs | USD 4.10-4.55 | Print coverage, cotton yarn cost, hem width |
| 100 × 180 cm, 430 GSM, reactive print velour, care label + belly band | 3,000 pcs | USD 4.55-5.30 | Retail packing, wider width yield loss |
| 100 × 200 cm, 470 GSM, dense face, insert card + barcode sticker | 5,000 pcs | USD 5.85-6.95 | Higher weight, lower carton count, packout labor |
Those ranges assume standard export cartons, OEKO-TEX compliant dyestuff input, and normal AQL final inspection. They do not include duty, destination inland freight, or low-volume air shipment. We prefer to show buyers which assumptions are carrying the number instead of giving a bare FOB line that looks precise but is not stable.
Print method is not a design conversation alone
For oversized custom oversized beach towels, decoration choice changes not only appearance but also wash behavior and production path. Reactive printing on cotton gives the softest hand among common full-face methods and usually performs better than pigment printing in crocking and handle. We still insist on lab evaluation before bulk because dark grounds, especially navy and saturated turquoise, can behave differently on sheared velour than on flat apparel fabrics.
Two factory details matter here. First, shear height consistency affects line sharpness; if the velour face is not trimmed evenly, the print reads cloudy on broad solids. Second, we watch for side-to-center shade variation during stenter finishing on wide towels because oversized widths show it more clearly than standard bath articles. That is why we check against approved standard under D65 light cabinet conditions, not only under warehouse lighting.
- Reactive print: best balance for soft-hand cotton artwork and repeated wash use.
- Pigment print: lower setup complexity in some cases, but usually harsher hand and weaker long-term brightness on cotton towel face.
- Jacquard weave: strong for identity programs with fewer colors and higher repeat stability.
- Embroidery: usually reserved for corner logos or woven badge application, not full oversized graphics.

The wash tests we care about before you approve bulk
We do not like approving beach towels from appearance alone. For this product, the failure modes usually show after wash: skewed body, edge roping, shade dulling on the face, lint release in early cycles, and hardening of the hand if the chemistry was pushed for color depth. For an oversized program, we normally recommend checking dimensional change after laundering, colorfastness to washing, and rubbing fastness before signoff.
The lab language should be concrete. We usually reference ISO 6330 for domestic washing procedure, ISO 5077 for dimensional change assessment, ISO 105-C06 for colorfastness to washing, and ISO 105-X12 for rubbing. If a resort group wants chlorine exposure confidence, we add a pool-chemical simulation or at minimum a bleach-related discussion depending on use case. For cotton printed velour, a reasonable internal target after agreed wash cycles is often within about 4% in length and width, but the exact tolerance should be written into the approval sheet instead of assumed verbally.
| Test item | Method we commonly use | Why it matters on oversized towels | Typical approval note |
|---|---|---|---|
| Dimensional change | ISO 6330 + ISO 5077 | Large format exaggerates skew and shrink visually | Agree tolerance before PPS approval |
| Colorfastness to washing | ISO 105-C06 | Printed grounds can flatten or shift after repeated care | Minimum grade target by color family |
| Rubbing fastness | ISO 105-X12 | Dark velour faces can transfer if under-fixed | Check dry and wet results separately |
Packing can save more money than squeezing yarn
We have seen buyers spend weeks negotiating a few cents on cotton selection while ignoring the fact that their packout choice added more than that. Oversized units consume carton volume quickly. Individual retail presentation looks good, but it cuts packing speed and lowers pieces per carton. For resort operating stock, bale or simple bulk carton packing usually gives the cleanest landed economics.
A large beach towel manufacturer should be able to show you carton logic, not only unit price. On one recent 100 × 180 cm program at 430 GSM, moving from folded insert-card retail pack to simple bulk pack increased carton efficiency by 16 pieces per master carton equivalent over the shipment mix and reduced pack labor enough to trim the FOB by roughly USD 0.18 per piece. The towel itself did not change at all.
- Ask for folded dimensions as well as finished open dimensions.
- Confirm whether cartons are packed by exact design ratio or assorted after inner bundling.
- Check carton gross weight; oversized cotton towels can exceed handling comfort before they exceed shipping limit.
- If e-commerce is planned, specify barcode position, suffocation warning language, and scan orientation early.
Lead time depends more on approval discipline than on loom speed
For most oversized cotton beach towel programs, we quote around 7-10 days for lab dips or print strike-off review, 10-14 days for development sample or pre-production sample depending on construction, and about 30-40 days for bulk production after approvals and deposit are in place. A more complex jacquard layout or retail packaging set can push that longer. If artwork is still moving, the calendar slips before weaving even starts.
The shortest path is a complete RFQ. That means finished size, target GSM, face/reverse construction, artwork repeat, label file, packing requirement, test expectations, and destination timing. Incomplete briefs create fake speed because the factory issues a quote quickly, then has to reopen it when hidden requirements appear.
- RFQ review and technical clarification: 2-4 days
- Lab dip or print strike-off confirmation: 7-10 days
- PPS or salesman sample: 10-14 days
- Bulk weaving, dyeing, shearing, sewing, packing: 30-40 days
- Final inspection and booking release: 3-5 days

What we would actually put on the buyer's short list
If we were reviewing factories for this category, we would not ask for a generic capabilities deck first. We would ask to see recent oversized cotton beach towel production with similar print and width, then verify whether the supplier can control the specific risks of large-format velour articles. That includes shearing consistency, width setting on finishing, and packout accuracy for bulky goods.
- Certificates on file: OEKO-TEX Standard 100 Class I, BSCI, and ISO 9001 should be current and attributable to the operating entity.
- MOQ clarity: for us, 500 pcs per design per color; suppliers should say this plainly rather than hiding setup charges later.
- Inspection language: confirm AQL level, in-line checks, and whether shade bands are controlled against approved standard.
- Sample route: lab dip, strike-off, PPS, and bulk approval should be written with named signoff points.
- Export readiness: carton marking format, barcode capability, and booking documentation should already be routine.
The useful question in an oversized beach towels supplier checklist exercise is not whether a mill says yes to custom work. Most do. The better question is whether its process is specific enough that your size, print, and packing assumptions stay intact from quotation to shipment.
A workable spec for first quotation
If you need comparable offers from multiple mills, keep the brief narrow. A good starting point would be: 100% cotton reactive-printed velour beach towel, finished size 100 × 180 cm, 430 GSM, sheared face and terry reverse, hemmed 4 sides, one woven brand label, OEKO-TEX compliant materials, bulk export carton packing, and target volume 3,000 pcs across two designs. That is specific enough for a real number without over-engineering the first RFQ.
If your program sits closer to hospitality operating stock than retail, you may be better served by simplifying the artwork and protecting wash life rather than chasing the heaviest hand. We often tell buyers this directly because cost per use is usually driven by turns and replacement rate, not by the first unboxing impression.
