Start With the Use Case, Not the Artwork
For beach programs, we first separate the towel into three jobs: drying skin, sitting on a lounger, and carrying a brand image under sun, chlorine, sunscreen, and repeated laundering. A towel that works for a one-day event does not always work for a resort deck. A towel that photographs well for DTC retail may be too slow-drying for a beach club laundry room.
Our mill in Gaoyang has made beach, resort, hammam, golf, gym, and hotel towels since 2007. We run about 2.4 million towels per year with 220 employees, and we quote OEM programs from MOQ 500 pcs per design per color. For high quality custom beach towels, the most common mistake we see is approving a soft handfeel sample without checking shrinkage, rub fastness, or edge stability after washing.
- Resort pool deck: needs 450-550 GSM cotton terry, strong hems, and colorfast yarn or reactive print.
- Retail beach towel: usually 380-480 GSM for pack weight control, with artwork detail and shelf presentation prioritized.
- Beach club rental: needs 500-620 GSM, denser pile, and tracking labels because loss rate can exceed wear-out rate.
- Promotional event: can work at 300-380 GSM if expectations are clear and the towel is not sold as a long-life product.
- Travel or surf brand: often chooses velour front with terry back, or microfiber print fabric where compact packing matters.
High Quality Custom Beach Towels: Fabric Benchmarks
A good beach towel is not only a high GSM towel. We look at grams per square meter together with yarn count, loop density, pile ratio, and finishing tension. A 430 GSM towel with balanced loops and clean reactive dyeing may outperform a loose 520 GSM towel that sheds after the first wash.
For cotton beach towels, we usually build with 16s, 21s, or 32s yarn depending on target price and handle. Coarser yarn gives body and deck durability. Finer yarn gives smoother printing and softer handfeel, but it can raise lint if the pile is not controlled. For jacquard or yarn-dyed stripes, the back beam setup also matters because uneven warp tension causes curved borders after finishing.
| Application | Recommended GSM | Common size | Construction notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Event giveaway | 300-380 GSM | 70 x 140 cm or 75 x 150 cm | Single jacquard border or pigment print; lower laundry-life expectation |
| Retail printed towel | 380-460 GSM | 76 x 152 cm or 80 x 160 cm | Velour face for print clarity, terry back for absorption |
| Resort beach towel | 450-550 GSM | 80 x 160 cm or 90 x 170 cm | Reactive dye or yarn-dyed stripe; reinforced long hems |
| Luxury beach club | 560-650 GSM | 90 x 180 cm or 100 x 180 cm | Higher pile, heavier shipping weight, slower drying time |
| Travel microfiber beach towel | 220-320 GSM | 80 x 160 cm or 90 x 180 cm | Sublimation print, compact pack, faster drying but different handfeel from cotton |
As a practical weight check, an 80 x 160 cm towel at 480 GSM uses about 614 g of fabric before hemming loss and finishing tolerance. Packed in a polybag with label and insert, the shipment weight can land around 665-705 g per piece. That affects carton count, freight cost, and retail price more than buyers expect.
Decoration Method Decides the Base Cloth
We do not choose decoration after weaving. For custom beach towels bulk programs, decoration controls the yarn, face finish, and tolerance range from the beginning. A logo that is simple enough for jacquard may become expensive and blurred in embroidery, while a full-photo graphic should not be forced onto cotton terry unless the buyer accepts lower definition.
| Decoration route | Best for | Factory caution | Typical MOQ |
|---|---|---|---|
| Jacquard woven logo | Resort names, club marks, geometric patterns | Fine gradients and tiny text do not weave cleanly; reverse side will show the pattern | 500 pcs per design per color |
| Reactive print on cotton | Bright graphics with soft handfeel | Needs good pre-treatment and wash-off to avoid back staining | 500-800 pcs per design |
| Velour print | Retail beach graphics and personalized beach towels | Shearing must be even; high pile shadows can affect line sharpness | 500 pcs per design |
| Sublimation microfiber | Photo artwork and all-over printed beach towels | Only works on polyester-rich fabric; handfeel is not cotton terry | 500 pcs per artwork |
| Embroidery patch or corner logo | Small brand mark on solid towels | Large embroidery becomes stiff and uncomfortable on a beach towel | 500 pcs per logo position |
Two process details are easy to miss. First, velour beach towels are sheared before printing, so uneven shearing creates pale streaks under solid ink areas. Second, reactive printed cotton needs adequate steaming and wash-off; if the hydrolyzed dye is not removed, we see staining during wet crocking tests, especially on navy, coral, and emerald grounds.
- For logos under 8 cm, embroidery or woven label is usually cleaner than terry jacquard.
- For repeated brand pattern, jacquard is more durable than surface print because the design is in the structure.
- For photo artwork, sublimation microfiber gives the cleanest image but changes the product category.
- For resort stripe programs, yarn-dyed weaving gives better long-term color separation than post-printing stripes.
- For retail shelves, velour face plus printed belly band often gives a better first touch than plain terry.
QC Tests We Use Before Bulk Approval
Before bulk cutting, we ask buyers to approve a pre-production sample, but we also run internal checks that are not visible in a photo. For beach towels, the highest-risk failures are color transfer, edge twisting, pile snagging, and shade variation between lots. These are different from hotel towel issues, where absorbency and repeated industrial washing usually dominate.
Our certification base includes OEKO-TEX Standard 100 Class I, BSCI, and ISO 9001. OEKO-TEX is important for skin-contact textile safety, but it does not prove that a towel will not shrink, twist, or fade. That is why we still specify physical tests in the tech pack.
| Test or check | Reference method | Buyer target we recommend |
|---|---|---|
| Dimensional change after washing | ISO 6330 wash procedure with line or tumble dry note | Cotton beach towels within 5-7%; microfiber within 3-5% |
| Color fastness to rubbing | ISO 105-X12 dry and wet crocking | Grade 4 dry, grade 3-4 wet for dark shades |
| Color fastness to washing | ISO 105-C06 | Grade 4 or above for major shade change |
| Pilling or surface change | ISO 12945-2 for relevant fabrics | Grade 3-4 minimum after agreed cycles |
| Towel absorbency spot check | AATCC 79 modified drop test for internal comparison | Drop sink under 5 seconds after finishing wash |
For looped cotton, we also inspect loose pile threads with a 4-point style defect map before hemming. If yarn tension is unstable, the defect appears as short lines where loops sit lower than the surrounding pile. On beach towels with large plain color fields, this becomes visible after shearing or brushing.
Pricing Bands by Volume and Spec
We quote in USD based on yarn cost, dye route, decoration, size, packing, and order volume. The figures below are realistic current factory-side bands for FOB China programs, not retail pricing. They exclude unusual accessories such as metal clips, waterproof pouches, RFID tags, or individual gift boxes.
| Spec example | 500 pcs | 1,500 pcs | 5,000 pcs | 10,000 pcs |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 380 GSM cotton velour print, 76 x 152 cm | USD 4.10-5.35 | USD 3.55-4.70 | USD 3.10-4.05 | USD 2.90-3.75 |
| 480 GSM cotton reactive print, 80 x 160 cm | USD 5.40-6.95 | USD 4.85-6.20 | USD 4.35-5.55 | USD 4.05-5.20 |
| 520 GSM yarn-dyed jacquard, 90 x 170 cm | USD 7.10-9.20 | USD 6.35-8.10 | USD 5.80-7.35 | USD 5.45-6.95 |
| 280 GSM sublimation microfiber, 80 x 160 cm | USD 2.75-3.80 | USD 2.35-3.25 | USD 2.05-2.85 | USD 1.92-2.65 |
A lower unit price can be the wrong purchase if the towel loses shape early. For example, a beach club buying 1,200 pcs of 360 GSM printed cotton at USD 3.25 may get only 35-45 commercial wash cycles before the hems look tired. Moving to a 500 GSM yarn-dyed option at USD 6.40 can reach 95-120 cycles in a controlled laundry. If the towel is rented to guests three times per week, the better towel can reduce replacement spending even though the first invoice is higher.
This is where we push back gently. If a buyer asks us to make high quality custom beach towels at a disposable-event price, we can make a lighter towel, but we will label it as promotional grade. We do not present a 320 GSM towel as a resort-grade article because the complaint cost will come back to the brand, not only to the mill.
Artwork Files and Color Control
Beach towel artwork should be prepared differently from T-shirt artwork. Terry loops move, velour pile reflects light, and jacquard edges are stair-stepped by yarn intersections. We ask for vector files for logos, Pantone TCX or TPX references where possible, and a printed or physical color standard for critical resort colors.
- Confirm the towel face: terry, velour, flat weave, or microfiber.
- Set the exact size after shrinkage, not only the greige fabric size.
- Send artwork at final scale with safe margins at least 25 mm from hem lines.
- Mark logo position in centimeters from top and side edges.
- Approve one strike-off or pre-production sample before bulk dyeing.
- Keep the approved sample in both buyer office and factory QC room for shade comparison.
For printed beach towels, we control shade with a light box using D65 and TL84 comparison. For yarn-dyed stripes, we lab dip the yarn before warping. For jacquard resort beach towels, we also create a weave simulation because a logo that looks clear on screen may lose small counter spaces once converted to pile and ground yarns. Our article on Pantone color matching for custom towels explains why a Pantone coated paper chip alone is not enough for textile approval.
Production Timing From Sample to Shipment
Timing depends on whether the program needs lab dips, printed strike-offs, jacquard loom setup, or only a solid towel with a label. Standard bulk production is rarely delayed by weaving alone. Delays usually come from late artwork, shade re-approval, or packaging changes after the carton cube has been calculated.
- Tech pack review: 1-2 working days if size, GSM, artwork, and packing are complete.
- Lab dip or yarn dip: 4-7 days for cotton colors, longer if the buyer needs multiple shade rounds.
- Printed strike-off or jacquard sample: 7-12 days depending on artwork complexity and loom schedule.
- Bulk weaving, dyeing, printing, and finishing: 18-30 days after sample approval for most 500-5,000 pc orders.
- Final inspection and packing: 2-4 days, including carton labeling and moisture check.
- Sea freight planning: usually 20-38 days port-to-port depending on destination; air freight is possible but expensive for cotton towels.
For new buyers, we recommend planning 45-60 days from complete tech pack to ex-factory shipment. For repeat programs using the same yarn, size, and approved color, we can often shorten that to 28-38 days. If the order is tied to a resort opening or summer retail launch, the safest approach is to freeze artwork before bulk yarn booking.

Packaging, Cartons, and Moisture Risk
Beach towels are bulky, and carton planning should happen before the purchase order is signed. A 90 x 170 cm cotton towel at 520 GSM can take a large carton quickly, especially if each piece is folded with a belly band, hangtag, and individual polybag. If the buyer later asks for gift boxes, the carton cube can increase by 25-40%.
Moisture control is also important for sea shipments. After dyeing and finishing, towels must be dried evenly before packing. We check packed carton moisture because terry pile can hide retained moisture in the center fold. For long routes or humid-season shipping, we use desiccant bags and avoid over-compressing cartons that trap damp air.
- Use export cartons with clear front, side, and top marks when the towels go to multiple hotel properties.
- Specify individual polybag only when needed; it adds cost and plastic handling at destination.
- For retail, confirm barcode placement before carton artwork is printed.
- For resort laundry, woven size and property labels are more useful than decorative hangtags.
- For Amazon or 3PL routing, ask for carton drop-test and master carton dimensions early.

What We Need to Quote Accurately
A clear RFQ saves time and prevents price changes after sampling. We can quote from a rough idea, but the most reliable pricing comes from a towel tech pack that includes size, GSM, yarn or handfeel target, decoration route, quantity by color, packaging, destination port, and compliance requirements. Our standard MOQ is 500 pcs per design per color.
For brands comparing suppliers, ask each OEM beach towel supplier to quote the same assumptions. If one quote is much lower, check whether it removed lab dips, downgraded GSM, used pigment instead of reactive dye, or excluded packing. Cheap quotes often hide in technical differences that only show up after the sample fails.
- Send target size, GSM range, and construction preference.
- Share artwork files in AI, PDF, PSD, or high-resolution PNG depending on decoration route.
- State the end use: resort, retail, promotion, rental, surf, cruise, or spa pool deck.
- List required standards such as OEKO-TEX Standard 100 Class I, BSCI, ISO 9001, or buyer-specific restricted substance rules.
- Confirm quantity by design and color, with MOQ 500 pcs per design per color.
- Provide packing method, shipping destination, and requested delivery window.
