Pool towels sit in the worst operating zone of a hotel linen program. They touch chlorine, sunscreen oil, wet loungers, outdoor carts, guest bags, concrete floors, and high-temperature laundry. A bath towel may stay inside the room and return with the housekeeping load. A pool towel often leaves the towel station, gets mixed with spa linen, or disappears into a beach bag.

For resort procurement, the first calculation should be circulation quantity and replacement rhythm. We normally ask hotels to share room count, average occupancy, pool chair count, towel station policy, and whether towels are issued by card, room number, or open basket. The spec that works for a 60-key boutique pool is not the same as a 420-key all-inclusive property with two towel stations and a beach shuttle.

A 650 GSM towel feels heavy on first touch, yet it can become a problem if the laundry has limited dryer capacity and carts are moved through narrow pool corridors.

Below is the working checklist we use when turning a hotel pool towel enquiry into a quoteable OEM specification. Buyers can copy this into an RFQ, but the important point is to avoid leaving blank fields that the factory must guess. Guesses become sample delays, shade disputes, or carton repacking close to vessel cut-off.

1. Confirm end use: pool only, beach plus pool, spa wet area, cabana service, or retail sale.
2. Set towel size with tolerance: common resort formats are 76×152 cm, 80×160 cm, 90×170 cm, and 100×180 cm.
3. Choose construction: full terry, velour face with terry back, jacquard, yarn-dyed stripe, or printed velour.
4. Lock GSM target and tolerance: for hotel pool towels we normally quote 430-650 GSM with ±5% production tolerance.
5. Define yarn: 16s/1, 21s/2, or 32s/2 cotton depending on pile height, handfeel, and wash target.

7. Select logo method: woven jacquard, dobby border, embroidery, reactive print, or sublimation on microfiber.
8. State test requirements: colorfastness, dimensional change, lint, seam strength, absorbency, and pH.
9. Confirm packing: pieces per polybag, carton weight limit, barcode label, towel station bundle, or RFID request.
10. Set approval gates: lab dip, pre-production sample, bulk top sample, inline inspection, and final AQL inspection.

Choose the Construction Around Abuse Points

The construction decision should be made before decoration. Pool towels fail in predictable places: pile snagging near chair frames, edge fray after repeated tumble drying, shade loss from chlorine, and oily stains from sunscreen. Each construction handles those risks differently.

For cotton resort programs, we often recommend a medium pile with a tighter ground rather than a very tall loop. A tall loop looks generous in the sample room, but it catches on wicker, lounger screws, and towel station shelving. If the hotel wants a soft face for cabana presentation, a velour-terry towel can work, but the buyer must accept that the velour face does not drink water as quickly as open terry loops.

Two technical details matter here. First, terry height should be checked on the production sample, not only the swatch, because loom tension changes handfeel across full width. Second, jacquard logos need artwork simplification. We advise avoiding tiny serif letters and single-pick lines because they blur after 20-30 industrial wash cycles.

Set GSM by Laundry Capacity and Cart Weight

GSM is not a quality ranking by itself. It is grams per square meter, and it affects absorbency, drying time, carton cube, laundry load weight, and staff handling. A procurement team may like a 700 GSM towel at the sample table, but the laundry manager may reject it after the first high-occupancy weekend.

Here is a simple weight example using a 90×170 cm towel. The fabric area is 1.53 square meters. At 480 GSM, the towel is about 734 g before allowance for hems and moisture variation. At 620 GSM, it is about 949 g. Across 2,000 towels in circulation, that difference is roughly 430 kg of extra textile moving through carts, washers, dryers, and storage.

• 430-480 GSM: good for fast-turn beach clubs, smaller dryers, and high loss environments where replacement cost matters.
• 500-560 GSM: our common middle range for hotel pool towels that need good handfeel without excessive drying time.
• 580-650 GSM: suitable for luxury cabana service, branded pool suites, or properties using controlled issue and strong laundry capacity.
• Above 650 GSM: possible, but we ask for laundry confirmation because drying cost and mildew risk rise quickly in humid climates.

Color and Logo Decisions That Reduce Loss

White pool towels are easy to bleach and visually clean, but they move between departments and disappear easily. Strong resort colors help identify ownership, yet they need better colorfastness control. We usually separate the decision into three questions: how the towel is identified, how the color survives chlorine, and how the logo survives laundry.

For hotel pool towels, we like woven identity when theft control matters. A jacquard name across the towel or a distinctive woven border is difficult to remove and does not add a raised stitch surface. Embroidery is better for a restrained crest near one corner, especially for cabana towels or VIP sets.

Color should be approved through lab dip and bulk cutting. For chlorine exposure, we reference ISO 105-E03 for colorfastness to chlorinated water and ISO 105-C06 for domestic and commercial laundering colorfastness. If the towel is dark navy, emerald, terracotta, or black, we recommend one extra wash-and-dry trial on the pre-production sample before bulk dyeing. Testing Gates Before Deposit and Before Shipment

A pool towel sample can look correct and still fail in operation. The two most common surprises are dimensional change after tumble drying and shade movement after chlorine exposure. We build testing gates into the project calendar so the buyer is not discovering these issues after the container lands.

• Dimensional change: measure before and after wash under ISO 5077, with a practical hotel tolerance often set at within -5% length and -5% width.
• Colorfastness to washing: use ISO 105-C06, especially for yarn-dyed stripes and dark reactive shades.
• Chlorinated water exposure: use ISO 105-E03 for pool-side color risk.
• Absorbency: use a drop or sink test internally, and record seconds to wet-out after finishing.
• Lint and pile shedding: check after first wash and tumble cycle because loose shearing fiber can contaminate guest clothing and laundry filters.
• Sewing strength: inspect long-side hems, corner lock stitches, and label seam stress after washing.

A lower unit price can become expensive if the towel leaves service early. For example, a 520 GSM woven-border towel at USD 5.10 that survives 95 hotel wash cycles costs about USD 0.054 per use before freight and laundry. A lighter USD 3.95 towel that loses acceptable appearance after 52 cycles costs about USD 0.076 per use. The cheaper PO line can cost roughly 41% more per usable cycle, even before replacement admin and stockout risk.

Packing, Cartons, and Receiving at the Resort

Pool towel packing is often treated as the last step, but it decides whether receiving and opening week run smoothly. A 90×170 cm towel at 580 GSM is bulky. If the carton is overloaded, it can exceed comfortable manual handling weight or arrive rounded and crushed. If the carton is too light, container utilization becomes poor.

• For large cotton pool towels, we often pack 12-20 pcs per export carton depending on towel weight and fold size.
• A practical carton gross weight target is 16-22 kg for hotel receiving teams.
• Towel station bundles can be packed by 10 pcs in clear inner bags to reduce counting time.
• Carton marks should include PO number, item code, color, size, quantity, gross weight, net weight, and carton number.
• If the hotel uses linen software, barcode or QR carton labels should be approved before mass printing.

A safe lead time depends on decoration, dyeing complexity, and approval speed. For a new custom pool towel, we prefer 55-80 days from confirmed technical file to ex-factory shipment. Repeat orders with the same yarn, color, label, and carton format can be faster, often 35-50 days if yarn and dye capacity are available.

The longest avoidable delay is usually not weaving. It is color or artwork indecision. A buyer sends a logo, then later changes the towel size, then asks for a darker blue after lab dip approval. A clear purchase order protects both sides. We do not need complicated legal language to make a towel program run well, but we do need measurable acceptance points. The PO should match the signed sample and should not rely on vague descriptions such as "luxury blue pool towel" or "hotel quality."

• Product name, size, GSM tolerance, construction, yarn, color reference, and approved sample date.
• Logo method, logo size, placement from towel edge, thread color or weave color, and artwork version number.
• Label content, care instructions, country of origin marking, barcode format, and carton mark layout.
• Testing requirements, including ISO 105-C06, ISO 105-E03, ISO 5077, and any buyer-specific laundry trial.
• Inspection standard, AQL level, defect classification, and whether third-party inspection is required.
• Shipping term, port, carton dimensions, carton quantity, document requirements, and latest delivery date.
