Start with the line items that change the quote

For microfiber towels for cleaning MOQ and pricing, the biggest mistakes happen before sampling. Buyers often send only size, color, and GSM. A mill still needs at least eight fields to quote accurately: blend, yarn split, knit type, edge style, color count, logo method, packout, and destination incoterm. A 320 GSM towel in 80/20 polyester-polyamide with coral fleece behaves differently from a 320 GSM warp knit towel in 85/15. They do not use the same yarn consumption, the same cutting yield, or the same sewing minutes.

MOQ is set by color, not only by total units

Our standard MOQ is 500 pieces per design per color, but microfiber programs become inefficient when buyers divide that too aggressively. Dark charcoal, cobalt, and black run well in sequence. A six-color order of 3,000 pieces may still cost more than a three-color order of 1,500 pieces if every shade requires separate lab dips, machine cleaning between lots, and retail-specific banding.

For export programs, MOQ logic also depends on whether the goods are plain-dyed stock colors or Pantone-near custom shades. Stock gray and blue remove one approval step. Custom fluorescent shades often require a second lab dip because microfiber reflects light differently than cotton, especially on brushed coral surfaces.

A realistic FOB China range by construction

Below are workable FOB Ningbo price bands for custom orders packed in export cartons, based on 2026 yarn and utility costs. These assume compliant packaging, care labels, and standard polybag bundles where requested. They do not include destination duty, inland delivery after port arrival, or marketplace prep such as FNSKU sticker application.

Construction / specOrder volumeFOB USD/pc
30×30 cm, 250-280 GSM, 80/20, overlock edge5,000-9,999 pcs0.31-0.39
40×40 cm, 300-320 GSM, 80/20, overlock edge3,000-7,999 pcs0.56-0.69
40×40 cm, 360-380 GSM, 80/20, edgeless ultrasonic3,000-7,999 pcs0.74-0.91
40×60 cm, 380-420 GSM, 70/30, hidden edge2,000-4,999 pcs1.12-1.38
40×40 cm waffle, 300-330 GSM, 80/203,000-7,999 pcs0.63-0.79

If a quote is far below these ranges, check three items first. Ask whether the quoted GSM is finished GSM after dyeing, whether the blend is verified at production stage, and whether the FOB point really includes delivery to Ningbo port plus export customs clearance. Some suppliers say FOB but price only ex-factory with local handling excluded.

What FOB should include on a microfiber towel order

For this category, FOB terms should be written clearly because cartons are light but bulky and local charges distort comparisons. On our side, a proper FOB Ningbo quotation includes finished goods, inner packing as specified in the PO, outer export cartons, carton marks, delivery to port, export declaration, and standard documents. It should also state whether testing costs are included or billed only if requested.

  1. Confirm named port: FOB Ningbo or FOB Shanghai, not just FOB China.
  2. Confirm packing basis: loose in carton, inner bundle, or retail-ready unit pack.
  3. Confirm whether third-party inspection booking is buyer-paid.
  4. Confirm if color lab dips, pre-production sample, and courier are inside or outside the quote.
  5. Confirm tolerance language for size, GSM, and carton quantity.

Absorbency claims need a named method

This is where vague articles usually fail buyers. If a supplier says the towel is "high absorbency," ask for the method. For microfiber cleaning cloths, we normally verify with an internal water uptake test based on conditioned sample weight: the specimen is stabilized for 24 hours, weighed dry, immersed for a fixed time, drained vertically for 30 seconds, then reweighed. The result is reported as water absorption ratio by mass. For cross-checking surface pickup on glass or coated panels, some buyers also request a controlled wipe test using a fixed-volume droplet on a painted plate.

A second useful control is capillary rise directionality. Warp knit cloths can show different pickup behavior along machine direction versus cross direction, especially after ultrasonic cutting. That matters for detailing and janitorial programs where streaking complaints come from edge drag rather than total absorbency.

The defect modes change with edge style

For microfiber towels for cleaning, edge construction is often the most practical buying decision. Overlock edges are economical and stable in laundry. Hidden edges reduce exposed seam friction. Edgeless ultrasonic cuts are popular for automotive and screen-safe use, but only if the cut temperature and blade condition are controlled. A poor ultrasonic cut leaves a hard melt line that feels smooth in hand yet drags on piano black trim.

Hidden edgeSewing variation at cornersRetail packs, better handfeel
Edgeless ultrasonicFused edge hardening if cutting is too hotAuto detailing, electronics, gloss surfaces
Silk band edgeBand shrinkage mismatch after washGift or presentation-led programs

Another construction-specific issue is split quality. A microfiber towel can meet weight and color specs while still underperforming because the filament split is incomplete. In practice that shows up as lower pickup and more pushing than grabbing on smooth surfaces. If the order is performance-led, ask for a retained sample from bulk and compare wipe feel after laundering, not just before.

How packaging can quietly add 12-18% to the program

On simple export orders, packaging is modest. On retail and marketplace programs, it becomes one of the larger cost drivers. Printed card sleeves, recycled claim panels, barcode stickers, suffocation warnings, and exact fold orientation all add handling time. For small cloths, manual folding can cost more than the embroidery-equivalent labor on a cotton towel program.

For example, a 40×40 cm, 320 GSM towel ordered at 6,000 pieces in bulk export pack may land around USD 0.61 FOB Ningbo in a standard overlock version. The same cloth packed as a printed 4-pack with insert card, individual barcode, and tighter fold control can move to roughly USD 0.71-0.76 per piece equivalent, depending on board grade and handwork. That difference is not hidden margin. It is mostly packaging material plus labor minutes.

Lead time is driven by color approval and packout, not knitting alone

A straightforward custom microfiber order usually moves faster than a cotton jacquard towel, but buyers still lose time in avoidable places. Knitting and dyeing are not normally the bottleneck. Lab dip confirmation, print card approval, and barcode verification are slower than most first-time buyers expect.

  1. Quotation and spec review: 1-3 days
  2. Lab dip or shade confirmation: 3-6 days
  3. Pre-production sample with label and packout: 5-8 days
  4. Bulk production after approval and deposit: 18-28 days
  5. Final inspection and booking window: 3-5 days

If the order uses stock shades and plain bundle packing, 20-24 production days is realistic after signoff. If it includes custom pantone-near colors, retail sleeves, and assortment collation, 28-35 days is safer. The quote sheet we recommend buyers send

A usable RFQ for this category fits on one page if the lines are disciplined. The goal is not to describe the towel with marketing language. The goal is to remove interpretation. For microfiber cleaning orders, the most useful RFQs identify the performance surface, because glass, kitchen, auto paint, and industrial wipe-down do not want the same cloth.

What certifications matter and what they do not prove

For buyer compliance, our baseline factory documents are OEKO-TEX Standard 100 Class I, BSCI, and ISO 9001. Those matter for chemical safety and systems control. They do not prove actual wipe performance, edge softness, or wash durability for your exact SKU. For that, the PO still needs measurable product tests. On microfiber orders, we also recommend wash dimensional stability, colorfastness to washing, and a lot-specific absorbency record using the same method agreed at sample stage.

If a supplier presents only certificates and no lot data, you still do not know whether the delivered batch matches the approved sample. Certifications reduce compliance risk. They do not replace product verification.
